  1. 1_s.jpg

    Fire Investigation Units

Within these units, we can stage fires that have ingited from a variety of sources and simulate various scenarios providing a realistic and wide ranging training environment for fire investigation.
  2. 3_s.jpg

    M96 Motorway

The M96 motorway is a superb amenity for simulated large scale vehicle incidents. At the Fire Service College we use this facility to train delegates in the management techniques and practical skills needed to deal with large scale traffic collisions and spillages using a wide range of vehicle types. This facility is regularly used to train helicopter emergency personnel, newly qualified paramedics as well as fire and rescue service personnel in multi-agency exercises.
  3. 4_s.jpg

    Fire Behaviour Units

Within these units, we can simulate special fire conditions such as 'Flashover' and 'Backdraft' allowing us to prepare Firefighters for this potentially leathal situation.

    Domestic Building

The domestic training building is a two storey, four bedroom house which incorporates an attic bedroom in the loft. This building has one second floor room, six first floor rooms, and four ground floor rooms that can be used for simulated or real fire training in domestic house scenarios.

    Rail Incident Complex

This totally unique facility includes a section of 'permanent way' complete with rail lines, third rail, OLE electrification and a rail platform. There are also a locomotive and several different carriages on a real track. The carriages have cold smoke generating capability for search and rescue exercises. The facility can also be used to simulate most rail incidents, including level crossing failure and accidents.
  7. 8_s.jpg

    Industrial Facility

This is a multi-use facility, housing a factory complex, complete with a boiler room in the basement, and a linked building which contains living accommodation and a take-away food retail outlet (chip shop with frying range). The facility doubles as a small incident progressing to a larger one, dependent upon the expertise of the crews and officers attending.
  8. 9_s.jpg

    Multi-use Commercial Building

This large concrete building can be used for a variety of exercise scenarios, including a shopping mall, a roll on/off ferry, prison breakout etc. Situated in a commanding position on the incident ground, it has four levels and can be approached from two sides on two different levels. One entrance is via a loading ramp on one side and the second is via shop store rooms in a walled courtyard on the other.

The building has both hot (live fire) and cold (smoke only) areas. There is a range of fully operational building services including a fully fitted Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) with ventilation extraction units for smoke control (as fitted to shopping malls), an escalator, an electric lift and a dry riser conforming to current British Standards.

    BA School

Used for training Fire Fighters in the use of Breathing Apparatus and ensuring their skills are current and at the required standard for this specialised piece of equipment.
  10. 11_s.jpg

    Industrial/High Rise Facility

In addition to the industrial factory facility, there is a high-rise factory complex with a car workshop built into the ground floor. Arranged on six floors, this facility can be used for a range of hot fire or cold smoke training scenarios.
  11. 12_s.jpg

    Urban Search & Rescue (USAR)

The USAR facility consists of four buildings designed to complement and support the delivery of urban search and rescue training. The main building used for skills training encompasses three indoor rigs. These facilitate progressive training and together provide valuable experience, incorporating many elements of USAR. This includes working in confined spaces, carrying out search and rescue operations in a multi-level collapsed building, technical search, and shoring, breaking and breaching skills.
  12. 13_s.jpg

    Fire Screen

The ‘Fire Screen’ is used for demonstrating the intense heat generated by fires, teaching fire fighters how to approach fires and the techniques for tackling and extinguishing fires.
  13. 14_s.jpg

    Marine & Ship Training

The 'Sir Henry' is a faithful replica of a real ship complete with bridge, forward and aft holds, engine room, vertical ladders and propeller shaft tunnel as well as confined space entry. The ship is berthed in dock undergoing loading or unloading, refit, embarkation etc, as necessary.

Training on the ship is regularly undertaken with outside agencies including members of the armed forces, who use the facility to give their helicopter pilots ‘real fire’ training. These multi- agency exercises allow the firefighting teams and equipment to be winched on and off the ship as part of the exercise.
  14. 15_s.jpg

    Aircraft (Passenger Jet)

The Fire Service College has a large range of real civil and military aircraft facilities from fast jets, helicopters, military aircraft, and passenger aircraft to a simulated Boeing 737. Delegates get the chance to practice and develop techniques on training rigs which portray a range of incidents such as fuel spills, passenger compartment fires, engine and undercarriage fires and a number of fires on a Merlin helicopter simulator. All simulators prove to be a challenge to delegates in real fire situations. When ready the delegates can then move on to the full scale Boeing 737 rig, where a full scale fire can be reproduced.
  15. 16_s.jpg

    Oil Rig

Our oil rig has been specially designed in a block configuration with different levels, accommodation, work areas etc, and is made up of interlinked sections to simulate a real oil rig. Built with a silo and helicopter-pad, it can be used to practise a range of different fire and rig incidents involving LPG and oil fires as well as chemical and radiation leaks.

In addition to the rig being used as an advanced fire fighting training facility, it is also used to assess incident and trauma management capabilities of delegates and organisations.
  16. 17_s.jpg

    Gas Storage Tanks

These storage tanks are used for 'cooling training'. Teaching fire fighters techniques for cooling adjacent tanks preventing fire from spreading and igniting surrounding material.

    Aircraft (737 Training Rig)

The Fire Service College has a large range of real civil and military aircraft facilities from fast jets, helicopters, military aircraft, and passenger aircraft to a simulated Boeing 737. Delegates get the chance to practice and develop techniques on training on rigs which portray a range of incidents such as fuel spills, passenger compartment fires, engine and undercarriage fires and a number of fires on a Merlin helicopter simulator. All simulators prove to be a challenge to delegates in real fire situations. When ready the delegates can then move on to the full scale Boeing 737 rig, where a full scale fire can be reproduced.

    Aircraft (Merlin Helicopter)
